According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture Georgy Khanishvili, Georgia is experiencing a shortage of meat, the main reason for which is the growth in cattle exports. Because of this, meat and meat products, milk and dairy products are getting more expensive in Georgia.

At the same time, he notes that Georgia has quite a large potential in terms of developing livestock production and it is necessary to increase the number of more highly productive livestock of foreign breeds, as well as develop farms.

Georgia should gradually move from individual, domestic farms to large and productive farms that will ensure the delivery of quality and appropriate products to the market. Georgy Khanishvili is confident that this segment will be mastered in 2-3 years and Georgian livestock farmers will be able to provide the market with high-quality milk and meat at reasonable prices.

According to the National Statistics Service of Georgia - Sakstat, in the third quarter the number of cattle amounted to 902.1 thousand heads, which is 2.1% less than the same indicator last year. The number of small cattle was 813.6 animals (-7.3%), pigs –225.4 thousand animals (-8.8%), and birds - 9.1 million animals (-3.7%). Meat production during the reporting period decreased in annual terms by 3.3% to 14.5 thousand tons, milk - by 4.8% to 160.3 million liters, eggs - by 5.1% to 146.2 million pieces.
