The number of beef cattle has been declining for ten years in Russia

The number of beef cattle has been decreasing in Russia for 10 years, said the director of the National Union of Beef Producers (NSPG) of Russia Roman Kostyuk on November 18 as part of the round table "Problems of beef cattle breeding in Russia", organized by APK Expert.

The number of beef cattle has been declining for ten years in Russia

“Beef cattle breeding requires investments that small farmers cannot receive today on the scale that the industry needs. We have had a 10-year decline in the number of livestock in the country,” Kostyuk said. Large holdings that produce beef meat have a microscopic increase in livestock because they cannot purchase quality livestock.

The reason is the division of Russia into clean zones and zones where vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease is mandatory for animals.

Recall that in Russia in the first half of 2022 there was a decrease in the number of cows of all categories. Compared to 2021, the decrease was 1.5%, i.e., 119 thousand cows less than in the same period last year. The total number of cows in Russia is 7.84 million heads. The anti-rating of the decrease in the number of cows was headed by the Novosibirsk region, Bashkortostan and Tatarstan.
