After being down 31% in May, June beef muscle cut exports slowed further, down 3% from the previous month and down 33% year-over-year at 60,469 mt. June beef muscle cut exports were higher to China/HK (+120 mt) but lower to other regions: Korea (-9,300 mt), Mexico (-6,700 mt), Japan (-4,600 mt), Taiwan (-2,400 mt), EU (-1,400 mt), ASEAN (-1,400 mt), Caribbean + DR (-1,080 mt), South America (-1,080 mt), Middle East (-950 mt), and Central America (680 mt), while exports to Canada were down just 1% (-100 mt). Although exports to Hong Kong (5,363 mt, -12%) slowed from the May pace, exports to China (1,763 mt, +101%) were the second highest since the market opened after last December when exports totaled 1,807 mt. Exports to Japan (18,145 mt, -20%), Taiwan (4,212 mt, -36%), Vietnam (804 mt, -24%), and the Philippines (622 mt, -45%) rebounded somewhat from May, but exports to Korea (14,549 mt, -39%) and Indonesia (294 mt, -58%) continued to slow in June. Exports to Canada (7,686 mt, -1%) increased from May to June and were down slightly year-over-year. Exports to Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean reflected lockdowns, limited capacity at foodservice, and the decrease in tourism: Mexico (4,245 mt, -61%), Chile (375 mt, -65%), Colombia (64 mt, -84%), Peru (61 mt, -60%), Guatemala (163 mt, -58%), Costa Rica (88 mt, -51%), Bahamas (162 mt, -47%), Netherlands Antilles (120 mt, -41%), and the Dominican Republic (90 mt, -85%). Exports were lower to the UAE (128 mt, -76%) and there were no exports to Kuwait in June (down from 142 mt last June) as low oil prices continued to weigh on Middle East economies.
June beef variety meat exports up 8% from May but were down 34% or -9,650 mt from last year at 18,544 mt. Beef variety meat exports were higher to China/HK (+230 mt) and Canada (+220 mt) in June but were lower to Japan (-4,400 mt), the Middle East (2,540 mt), ASEAN (-970 mt), Mexico (-840 mt), Korea (-790 mt), Caribbean + DR (-380 mt), and Central America (-80 mt), while exports to Africa (-30 mt) and South America (-20 mt) were both just down slightly. Exports to Mexico (5,622 mt, -13%) were up 28% from the previous month, and exports to Egypt (3,239 mt, -44%) were the highest since March but remained lower year-over-year. Exports to Japan (2,598 mt, -63%) were up 24% from May but have been below year-ago levels all year. Exports to South Africa (1,860 mt, +30%) were the highest since March and exports to Cote d’Ivoire (207 mt, up from 0 mt last year) maintained the strong pace seen since late last year. Exports slowed to Angola (154 mt, -77%) and Gabon (76 mt, -30%). Exports were up slightly to Hong Kong (1,023 mt, +1%) and exports to China reached 223 mt, up from 5 mt last year. Exports to Peru (965 mt, +99%) were the highest since 2015, and exports were also higher to Canada (651 mt, +50%) and Jamaica (360 mt, +17%). Exports slowed further from May for Korea (511 mt, -61%) and Indonesia (350 mt, -65%), while exports to the Philippines (158 mt, -65%) rebounded somewhat from May.
Year-to-date beef and variety meat exports dropped below year-ago levels in May, and through June total beef exports were down 9% or -57,000 mt from last year. Year-to-date beef/bvm exports were higher to Africa (+7,000 mt), Canada (+6,400 mt) and the Russia region (+20 mt) but were lower to Mexico (-27,6400 mt), the Middle East (12,400 mt), Korea (-10,200 mt), Caribbean + DR (-4,200 mt), ASEAN (-3,700 mt), EU (-3,200 mt), Japan (-3,000 mt), South America (-2,200 mt), Taiwan (-2,000 mt), China/HK (-1,500 mt), and Central America (-800 mt).
June beef exports accounted for 8.0% of production and 9.7% when adding variety meats, as compared to 12.7% and 15.4% in June 2020. January – June exports accounted for 10.9% of beef production and 13.3% when adding variety meats, down from 11.6% and 14.2% last year.
June beef export value per head of fed slaughter averaged $219.53/head, down $105.57/head or -32% from $325.10/head for June 2019. January – June export value per head averaged $300.43/head, down $13.02/head or -4% from $313.45/head last year.
